Chapter 01

The Concepts of Forensic Science

Introduction
Forensic science is the business of providing timely, accurate, and thorough information to all levels of decision makers in our criminal justice system. The cops, DA, defense attorney, judge and the jury don't want a bunch of scientific hocus-pocus, they want straightforward information to help them decide what to do.
Read the Case of "The Key to the Crime - The I-5 Cadillac", a gruesome murder provoked by anger, passion, and greed that illustrates the scope of a scientific crime scene investigation and the relevancy of physical evidence in reconstructing criminal behavior. Within minutes of starting the autopsy, Dr. Richards had located a round hole in the victim's skull. The hole was slightly larger than an inch and there was heavy sooting on the tissue and bone. There was only one explanation for this kind of trauma.
